Background of the study
Yoruba idioms are rich repositories of cultural wisdom, their meanings often anchored in historical and social contexts. However, semantic shift—where word meanings change over time—can alter the interpretative framework of these idioms. In Ibadan, rapid urbanization and exposure to global cultures have catalyzed changes in the semantic layers of Yoruba idioms. This study examines how semantic shifts affect the meaning and usage of idiomatic expressions. Fieldwork involving interviews with elder speakers and analysis of contemporary usage reveals that certain idioms have evolved, sometimes losing their original metaphorical richness while acquiring new connotations (Olusegun, 2023). Researchers have observed that these shifts can lead to misinterpretation among younger generations, thereby weakening the cultural transmission of traditional values. By comparing historical records with current usage, this study aims to document semantic changes and assess their impact on communication and cultural identity (Adebayo, 2024). The investigation employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to capture the nuances of meaning transformation, contributing to the broader discourse on language evolution in urban settings.
Statement of the problem
Although semantic shift in Yoruba idioms is acknowledged as a phenomenon, there is limited empirical research on its effects in Ibadan. Preliminary findings indicate that evolving meanings may lead to confusion and a loss of cultural context, thereby affecting intergenerational communication (Ibrahim, 2023). This study seeks to address these concerns by analyzing the nature and consequences of semantic shifts in Yoruba idioms.
Objectives of the study

  • To document semantic changes in Yoruba idioms over time.
  • To analyze the impact of these changes on meaning and cultural transmission.
  • To recommend strategies for preserving original idiomatic meanings.
    Research questions
  • What semantic shifts have occurred in Yoruba idioms in Ibadan?
  • How do these shifts affect the interpretation of idioms?
  • What measures can help preserve the traditional meanings?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the interplay between semantic evolution and cultural identity in Yoruba idioms. Its findings will benefit linguists, cultural historians, and educators by providing strategies to maintain the integrity of idiomatic expressions amidst rapid social change (Okeke, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the examination of semantic shift in Yoruba idioms in Ibadan. It does not encompass other regions or broader linguistic changes.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantic Shift: The change in meaning of words or expressions over time.
  • Idioms: Fixed expressions with figurative meanings.
  • Yoruba Language: A major language spoken in southwestern Nigeria.
